Designing for the Bigger Picture

A common starting point for many homeowners is to approach design one room at a time. It feels manageable and practical, an easy way to make progress without committing to a full-home plan. However, in professional interior design, a more holistic approach is often what leads to the most cohesive and successful results. Designing room by room can make it much harder to create a home that feels intentional, connected, and complete.

When each room is designed in isolation, it’s easy for a home to start feeling disjointed. Finishes don’t quite relate, colors shift from space to space, and there’s no clear sense of continuity. A well-designed home should feel connected. As you move from one space to another, there should be a natural flow. Materials, colors, and details should speak to one another, even if each room has its own personality. That level of cohesion doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from seeing the full picture from the very beginning.

When we begin a project, we’re not just thinking about one room. We’re thinking about how the entire home will live and feel as a whole. How does the entry set the tone for what’s to come? How does the kitchen flow into the living spaces? By designing holistically, we’re able to make decisions that support the entire home, rather than solving one space at a time.

Designing room by room can often feel like the more practical or cost-effective approach, but in many cases, it can lead to decisions that don’t hold up over time. A piece that works in one space might not make sense once the rest of the home evolves. Materials may need to be replaced, or elements reworked to better align with new decisions. Taking a more comprehensive approach from the start doesn’t necessarily mean completing everything at once; it means having a clear plan for the home as a whole. With that roadmap in place, projects can still be implemented in phases, but each decision is made with the bigger picture in mind. This leads to fewer revisions, more thoughtful investments, and a more efficient process overall.

A well-designed home is rarely the result of isolated decisions. It’s the result of a clear, overarching vision carried through every space. It’s not about making every room look the same; it’s about curating a home where everything flows and belongs. By approaching design holistically, we’re able to design homes that feel cohesive, intentional, and truly finished. These spaces not only look beautiful, but live well for years to come.
