I recently had the privilege to design a classic and inviting home in The Heights area of Houston. It was a labor of love that required us to be patient throughout the design process. We started this project in May 2021 and just about a year later, April 2022, the project was completed. All good things take time, right? Spoiler alert, the dining room turned out absolutely stunning for this precious family!
The Vision:
The client was a young family, with one little girl and another on the way while we were working together. Needless to say, we needed to make this dining room a space for family and friends to gather, entertain and create memories. The family needed the dining room to function as their primary eating space and not just a formal space for special occasions. They liked warm and earthy tones with a touch of organic modern flair.
The Design Process:
I knew I wanted to use the color green throughout the home and the dining room was a great place to go bold with the color. We installed an abstract vinyl wallpaper with subtle green tones on the walls and a solid green grasscloth for the ceiling to enhance the coffered detail in the room. It was such a statement when you entered into the dining room space and gave it so much character.
Since the focal point was the texture on the walls and ceiling, we went with a simple wool rug in a darker tone to hide any potential spills. The chairs were upholstered in a performance fabric so everyone could just enjoy being together in the space and not worry about sticky fingers or food!
The family was very open to using original art throughout their home; so we worked with abstract artist Heather Essian to create two beautiful watercolor landscapes that hang in the dining room.. I loved Heather’s smaller landscapes and knew I could frame them with oversized matts to make a large impact. An original piece of art that size would have been way over budget but by purchasing smaller pieces and framing them in larger frames, we were still able to go original and not break the bank. This is a great way to start collecting original art… Pro Tip: Buy small and frame large!
We look forward to serving new and returning clients with the same LMI experience, but on a smaller scale and with a quicker timeline!
